If you have TRICARE and want to know whether it can help with TMS therapy, here's the short answer. TRICARE covers transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on an outpatient basis for adults with major depressive disorder, and every TMS course needs prior authorization first. RSLNT Wellness accepts TRICARE, TriWest and VA Community Care. VA Community Care usually starts with a VA referral, and we confirm referrals and benefits at your consult.

You've done your part. Paperwork shouldn't be what stops you.
Maybe you served. Maybe you're married to someone who did. You've tried a medication or two, maybe some therapy, and some mornings still feel heavy. Then you look up TMS and land on a policy PDF written for billing offices.
That's a lot to ask of someone who's already worn out. You shouldn't have to decode a policy manual just to ask a simple question, so we pulled the parts that matter to you into one page.
Does TRICARE cover TMS therapy in Utah?
Yes, for depression. Utah is in the TRICARE West Region, which TriWest Healthcare Alliance manages. TriWest's current TMS guidance for West Region providers says:
- TRICARE covers TMS only for major depressive disorder (MDD), and it treats that as coverage for treatment-resistant depression when your records show TMS is medically necessary.
- Prior authorization is required before treatment starts.
- TMS coverage is for adults.
- TMS has to be given by a qualified TRICARE mental health provider who meets Utah's licensing rules.
- TRICARE does not cover TMS for PTSD, OCD, depressive episodes tied to bipolar disorder, or other conditions.
We also offer TMS protocols for PTSD, OCD, anxiety, cognitive enhancement and pain, plus therapy, medication management, telehealth, accelerated TMS and couples and family care. TRICARE's TMS benefit is for depression only. We'll tell you that plainly at your consult, and we can talk through other care options that may fit your plan.
What does "treatment-resistant" mean to TRICARE?
TriWest defines treatment-resistant depression as depression that hasn't responded well enough to adequate trials of antidepressants from two different classes, taken as prescribed at a full dose for long enough, unless side effects made you stop.
TriWest says a trial of talk therapy isn't required for TMS. It does encourage therapy alongside medication when it's appropriate.
Your provider also has to check for things that can rule TMS out or call for a closer look. TriWest's list includes metal anywhere in the head, a seizure history, a pacemaker, an implanted defibrillator, an implanted medical pump, and a history of head injury, raised pressure inside the skull, or stroke.
You don't have to figure out whether you qualify. That's our job at the consult. Knowing what TRICARE asks for just tells you what's worth bringing.
What to bring to your TMS consult
Bring what you can. If something's missing, that's fine. Your pharmacy or past prescriber can usually print your medication history later.
- Your TRICARE ID card. If you're a family member, bring the sponsor's information too.
- A list of every antidepressant you've taken. For each one, write the name, roughly when you took it, the highest dose you reached, and why you stopped or how it went. TriWest asks providers to document exactly these details, so this list is the most useful thing you can bring.
- Your therapy history. Who you saw, about when, and whether it's ongoing.
- Your current prescriber and primary care manager. Names and phone numbers, so your care team can coordinate.
- Your medical history that affects TMS. Any implants or metal in or near the head, any seizures, pacemaker or defibrillator, and any past head injury or stroke.
- A VA referral, if you're a veteran using VA Community Care. VA Community Care usually starts with a VA referral, so bring your referral or authorization details if you have them.
How prior authorization for TMS works
Your treating provider requests prior authorization from TriWest before TMS begins. TriWest expects that request to include your antidepressant history, a contraindication review, a recent score from a standard depression questionnaire such as the PHQ-9, and a written summary of your depression.
The records on your checklist become the raw material for that request. Coverage still depends on your plan, your history and TriWest's decision, so we confirm benefits at your consult and you aren't left guessing.
