Here's the short version. TriWest Healthcare Alliance is the company that helps run two programs in Utah: it administers TRICARE in the West Region, and it's the third-party administrator for VA community care. Which one applies to you decides your next step.
RSLNT Wellness accepts TRICARE, TriWest and VA Community Care. VA Community Care usually starts with a VA referral, and we confirm referrals and benefits at your consult. We're a veteran-owned, minority-owned and veteran-operated TMS clinic inside Provo Towne Centre, and your first step is a free consult.
You want a clear answer before you make another call
You've already done the hard part. You noticed something isn't right and you started looking for help. Then the paperwork shows up: referrals, authorizations, regions, portals. It's easy to put the whole thing off for another month.
You shouldn't have to figure out a federal health program alone just to ask about TMS. Below is what TriWest is, which path you're on, and what to bring so your first visit gets you real answers.
What is TriWest?
TriWest Healthcare Alliance is a company that works for the government. It isn't a health plan of its own. TriWest's own page describes two jobs:
- TRICARE West Region. TriWest administers TRICARE in the West Region. TRICARE's West Region page names TriWest as the West Region contractor, and TriWest started this work on January 1, 2025.
- VA community care. VA's page on its community care program names TriWest as the third-party administrator for Region 4, which includes Utah. TriWest's own page confirms this as of October 2026.
Is TriWest the same as TRICARE West?
No, though the names make it easy to mix them up. TriWest's TRICARE guide puts it this way:
- TRICARE is the health plan for the uniformed services, managed by the Defense Health Agency within the Department of Defense (also called the Department of War).
- TRICARE West is the region. It covers 26 states, and Utah is one of them.
- TriWest is the company that serves as the regional contractor for TRICARE West, and as a third-party administrator for VA community care.
So when someone says "I have TriWest," they usually mean one of two things: TRICARE in the West Region, or a VA community care referral.
Which path are you on?
If you're a veteran using VA health care, your path is VA Community Care. VA's eligibility page says you need to be enrolled in or eligible for VA health care, and to have approval from your VA health care team before you get care from a community provider.
If you or your family has TRICARE, your path is TRICARE West. TriWest lists who TRICARE serves: active duty service members and their families, National Guard and Reserve members and their families, retirees and their families, survivors, and certain former spouses.
If you have both, bring both cards. We'll help you sort out which path fits before anything starts.
What is TMS, in one paragraph?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a brain stimulation treatment done in our clinic. The National Institute of Mental Health describes the most common side effects as mild, such as scalp discomfort or headache. For more, read how TMS works at our clinic.
MagVenture MagPro R30, FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder.
Does TriWest cover TMS?
Coverage details are from TRICARE, TriWest and VA public pages as of October 2026 and can change.
TriWest isn't the plan, so the answer depends on your path.
With TRICARE: TRICARE's coverage page says TRICARE covers TMS on an outpatient basis for adults with major depressive disorder. TriWest's TMS guidance for TRICARE West providers says TRICARE covers TMS only for major depressive disorder and that prior authorization is required. Your own coverage still depends on current TRICARE rules, your diagnosis, documentation and authorization.
With VA Community Care: it starts with a VA referral. What VA approves is spelled out in your authorization letter.
We also offer TMS protocols for PTSD, OCD, anxiety, cognitive enhancement and pain, plus therapy and medication management. TRICARE's TMS benefit is for depression only, and we'll tell you that plainly at your consult.
Do I need a referral for TMS with TriWest?
For VA Community Care, yes. VA's referral page lays out the steps:
- Ask your VA health care team for a referral to the community provider.
- VA reviews your request, confirms the type of appointment you need, and prepares the referral. This part can take up to 14 days.
- After you schedule, VA sends an authorization letter. It lists an authorization number, your approved community provider, a description of the care you can get, and how long you can keep getting care without another referral.
If you need more care later, you or your community provider can request a new referral. Our post on how the VA Community Care referral works goes step by step.
For TRICARE, TMS needs prior authorization. Your treating provider sends the request to TriWest with your records, including the medicines you've already tried. Don't stop or change any medicine on your own. Talk with your prescriber first.
Our post on what to bring to a TRICARE TMS consult covers the records that help most.
What should I expect to pay for TMS?
Our focus is your care. We want costs to be clear before you start. We check your insurance first, talk through payment options and in-house financing, and go over it all at your free consult. What you pay for TMS depends on your plan. Our page on TMS cost in Utah covers what we look at before treatment starts.
