What Is TMS Therapy? Plain Answers for Utah County

You've heard the letters TMS from a doctor, a friend or a late-night search, and you want a straight answer before you spend any more energy on it. Maybe you've tried a medicine or two. Maybe you've done therapy. You're still waking up heavy, and you're not looking for a sales pitch. You want to know what this is and whether it's worth a conversation.
This page answers the questions people ask most, in plain words, with sources you can check. RSLNT Wellness is a veteran-owned, minority-owned and veteran-operated clinic inside Provo Towne Centre, and TMS is one of the things we do every day.
What is TMS therapy?
TMS stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation. "Transcranial" means through the skull. It's a brain stimulation treatment done in a clinic.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) describes repetitive TMS (rTMS) as a therapy that uses an electromagnet to stimulate the brain with repeated low-intensity pulses.
In plain terms: TMS is a treatment done in a clinic, and it usually sits alongside therapy, medication or both. Your clinician decides how it fits with the care you already have.
What is TMS therapy used for?
MagVenture MagPro R30, FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder.
NIMH says brain stimulation therapy is usually used after other treatments have been tried. If antidepressants haven't helped you enough, it's worth asking what comes next. Your clinician decides whether TMS fits you.

What is TMS like during a visit?
The VA's clinical guidance on TMS says the patient sits in a chair, usually with a headrest, while a doctor or technician positions the device and sets the pulse pattern. Here's what a visit usually looks like at our clinic:
- You sit in a reclining chair in your regular clothes.
- Your care team finds your treatment spot and records it so each visit lines up the same way.
- The device delivers pulses in short bursts while you sit.
- When the session ends, you get up and go back to your day.
Some people describe tapping on the head. NIMH lists side effects such as discomfort where the magnet is placed and mild headaches, and says most appear to be mild and short-term when expert guidelines are followed. Tell your clinician if something bothers you.
Visits are usually most weekdays for several weeks. Your clinician sets your schedule. To see the details of a visit with us, read how TMS works at our clinic.
Who is TMS therapy for?
Many people who ask about TMS have tried antidepressants without the results they hoped for, or couldn't tolerate the side effects. Some people keep taking their medication during TMS and some adjust it with their prescriber. Your clinician decides with you. Don't stop or change any medicine on your own. Talk with your prescriber first.
TMS isn't for everyone. Metal in or near the head, certain implants, a seizure history and other factors can make TMS a poor choice. Sometimes the honest answer is "not right now." If TMS isn't a fit, we'll tell you and talk through other options.
Does TMS replace therapy or medication?
Not necessarily. NIMH says a treatment plan that includes brain stimulation usually also includes talk therapy, medication or both, and that people are likely to be advised to continue those treatments. At RSLNT, TMS, talk therapy and medication management are under one roof, so your care team can talk to each other.
